we started off december with a date to the nutcracker. (hadley, you stayed home with daddy.)

isabella, you layed this outfit out for over a month almost every day in anticipation of the nutcracker. you love fancy dresses that spin.

we met up with a bunch of family and friends. here are your two best friends!

right around 19 months you switched to one nap. i was trying to keep you up for a little longer so i gave you a lollipop and let you watch a show. then i ~~cleaned the whole entire kitchen~~ looked on facebook for awhile and when i looked over at you, this is what i saw. lollipop still in hand. passed out. i guess you have always been a good sleeper.

2. you say "wow" when you notice isabella's stickers on her feet. you notice what people are wearing and you almost always acknowledge it by saying "wow." its a total confidence booster when i walk into a room and you look at me and say "WOW!" :)
(the only thing that would make it even more typical is if you ran your stroller into something and screamed about it. you are a loud girl!)

i've been really wanting to get back into blogging, but i wanted to change my blog. i want it to be more of a letter to the girls. i want to feel like i can just post a one sentence post with a quote of isabella's from our day. or just one picture from our day. i'm not sure where the pressure to have a lengthy, witty, interesting post came from, but i'm ready to ignore that and make this just about my girls and our days. this post has pushed me over the edge into action. so, i have a lot of catching up to do (easter, hadley's first birthday, and basically all of summer), but i'll get there. for now, here are some pictures of isabella on her first day of school.

dear isabella,

you seem to like school. you LOVE painting. you love your backpack. you love that liana is in your class with you. otherwise, you will not tell me much about it. you worried the first day that someone might try to take your new shoes. i have no clue where that came from! you pronounce preschool "prettyschool." you are very proud of yourself and we are proud of you too. (and yes, i did cry more than you did on your first day). hadley spends her time without you calling for you. "lella! whereaaareyouuu!?"

i just asked you what you'd like me to say about your preschool and you replied, "thank you for God aaaaand thank you for painting. amen." (when you pray, you say "aaaaaand" a lot. i think you sound like caroline and i have a feeling that's who you're trying to sound like too).

the latest with hadley:

two weeks ago she said "bye" to mike as he was leaving for work. she doesn't say it every time we ask her, but i'm pretty sure she's really saying it when she does. i also think she says "hi." and this morning she pulled herself up to standing for the first time. i was watching tv (like any good mommy) and the next thing i know she's standing right there looking at me. at least mike can take comfort in that we both missed it. (in my defense it was pretty shocking that they voted matt to redemption island again on survivor!) :)

cousin weekend

we had my sister's kids for the weekend last weekend. which means we went from having two kids to having six kids! all of the kids were amazing and we had so much fun having so much time with them.

on sunday we brought them all to church. we were pretty proud to get all of them bathed and dressed and out the door...on time!

these girls are 10 weeks apart. i just love that my sister and i had babies so close together. growing up we were really close to our cousins. they were like siblings to us. and i have a feeling it will be the same for our girls and their cousins. but seriously, how cute are these girls?!

talks non stop (seriously. non. stop.)

makes up words

talks emphatically with her hands

describes what she's saying by doing it (like when she was done with a time-out for licking the couch and came to apologize and said, "sorry for licking the couch like this"...and licked the couch to show me.)

anyway, here are a few videos that capture some of these things. plus, her voice is just so cute and i never want to forget how she sounds right now.

i played around editing photos in picnik today. i don't know what i'm doing and i don't know if things look good or cool or what. and then i end up staring at the screen for so long that i can't tell if i just totally ruined a picture. here are all the different effects that i like. i think.

we had the girls' cousins grant and caroline over today. it was freeeeezing, but the kids had fun at the park.

hadley girl is 9 months old . i know everyone says this but it really is going too fast. what if she's our last one? she can't be this close to turning one already!

she is the sweetest, most cuddly baby girl ever and i am loving every second of it.

she is in an extreme stage of being a mama's girl. (and i'm ~~secretly~~ loving every second of it).

her hair is super curly when it gets wet.

she still has no teeth.

she can: wave, clap, do 'so big', sign 'all done', feed herself, rock on her hands and knees (no crawling yet-thank goodness), shake something and pat something when we say either "shake shake shake" or "pat pat pat," dance, and give kisses.

her stats:

weight: 16 lbs. 9 oz. (13%)

height: 26 in. (8%)

head circumference: 45cm. (78%)

she sleeps from about 7:30 or 8pm to 7:15am.

she takes two long naps in the day and one short evening nap.

she nurses/breast feeds (which one sounds less gross?) 4 times a day.

she has 3 real food meals and one snack a day.

she would probably eat veggie booty all day every day if we let her.

she "talks" a lot.

sometimes she screams. and its annoying.

she loves her blankies.

she LOVES the show Play With Me Sesame. (isabella wouldn't really watch tv until she was much older, so having a baby like tv is new to me. and i know i shouldn't, but i think its really cute how excited she gets when it comes on).

she still doesn't love her car seat. thankfully we discovered putting the girl's car seats right next to each other and isabella can hand her food and/or entertain her.

she truly is just a sweet sweet girl. we are all so in love with her and so thankful God gave us such a precious baby.

i had to add this picture. after about 10 minutes at the park, isabella had to go potty. (the girl has to go every 5 seconds and when she has to go, she HAS TO GO). so i quickly buckle hadley back in the stroller hold isabella while running to the nasty out house. just as i'm pulling her jeans down to put her up on the toilet, she peed. oh, we were so close! so, here she is with pee all down her jeans...i just couldn't resist taking a picture. poor girl had to waddle the whole way home.

there were a couple of gorgeous fall days last week and my mom came over on one of them and we walked to mill creek town center with the girls to get an eggnog latte(!).

*can you see how crusty/gross hadley's right eye is in a couple of these pictures? she has had a blocked tear duct since birth and it seemed to only be getting worse. i went out of town last weekend and when i got home it was gone! i asked mike if he noticed it all weekend and he said, "yes, but i've been praying for it." ooooooh, if we pray for our children (even the stupid simple things), God will answer us? i wish i would have ever thought to pray for it, but i'm thankful to have a husband who did. and i'm thankful for the reminder that we should be praying over even the little things for our girls.

when i saw this post by my friend meghan, i went right out to buy the same shirts her girls are wearing. ($8.00 at target! fyi). i always try to copy whatever meghan is doing...she's one of those friends you hate being friends with because she does everything the way you wish you could (but of course i don't actually hate being friends with her). if i call her in the 5 o'clock hour she's making dinner so that its ready when her husband gets home. her house is decorated beyond beautifully. her two year old is hilarious, polite, smart, well behaved, well dressed, well accessorized, and adorable. her baby is one of the cutest babies i've ever seen (and i love her name). she has good style...even her sweats and tee-shirt look looks good on her. she's an amazing photographer. she's a christian who lives out her faith. she is a really really good mom. she makes yummy food. one time she spent over a half an hour on the phone with me telling me good meal ideas and which grocery stores to shop at for the best prices. this post even made me want to get pregnant again (i'm not!). anyways, my point is: i copy meghan because she is someone worth copying. (can you tell that i love her? because i do. we've been friends for 16 years(!) and i still consider her one of my closest friends). okay, well, here are some pictures of the girls. in their matching shirts from target.

i did it! i finished! here is the project that was inspired by my sister.

as you can see, i ran out of tape at one point so it took me awhile to pick some up and finish the project.

i bought a different blue tape that claims to make perfectly straight lines. there must be some fine print on it somewhere that says, "unless you're painting on a textured wall."

i thought i was going to use a blue-ish color that we used in our old kitchen, but when i opened the can it was all brown and stinky. i guess paint goes bad? anyways, this was the color of our old living room and i still like it and think the neutral-ness of it will be perfect.

i think the swing is a nice touch

when i first started peeling off the tape i was getting real annoyed that the lines were so wobbly. but, i don't have enough patience to go through and try to fix it. plus, i'm not sure i really could because of the texture. so, let's just call it part of the charm.

and here is my mostly potty trained girl! at one point while i was working on the wall she came over to give me a paint brush and said, "bada-ching!" it was one of the funnier things i've ever heard her say. another time she told me that i was working so hard and she was proud of me. can you tell what we've been saying to her a lot during this potty training time?

i'm no decorator, so if you have any advice for what to do up on that big shelf i'll appreciate it! (cough cough, emily).

we're shocked. isabella didn't roll over until she was about 5 and a half months, so we weren't expecting this at all. plus, hadley has never liked being layed on her back so she really hasn't had much floor time to be able to practice. but, she was laying on the couch and the next thing we knew, she was trying to roll over. i thought that the slant in the couch was helping her, but we moved her to the floor and she kept doing it. and two days later? she rolled from front to back. i could have sworn i just had her yesterday, but she's already growing up. it goes too fast!

this was the very first time. on the couch.

tim and abby came and stayed at our house for a couple of days so they were here to witness it!

my sister is amazingly talented. i always joke that she took all of the creative genes from our parents and left none for me. when i was little i didn't even like to color. it seemed like too much tedious work to concentrate on staying within the lines. and to this day, mike is usually the one to sit down with isabella, a coloring book, and some markers. all of that to say, emily is amazing and creative and i just try to copy everything she does. so when i saw this post, i decided to give it a try. i just started today, so i have a ways to go, but here's what it looks like so far:

this is our "cubby hole." i guess its where the tv is supposed to go, but we didn't want our tv that close to the ground (and that close to little hands). so, of course, i asked emily what we should do with the space and she suggested putting a pad down with some pillows and a basket of books for a little cozy reading nook. we call it the cubby hole.

emily used a stencil and then hand painted, but i don't have the patience for that so i'm using tape and then i'll just paint over the whole thing.

i'll post again when i finish. if it turns out...

2 month update

sweet sweet hadley girl. she is the best baby. here are her stats:

typical schedule:

wake/eat between 7am and 8am

up for a little less than an hour

nap for the next 2 hours

wake/eat around 11am

sometimes she only stays up to eat and goes straight back for a nap. but in the last couple days she's been staying awake for about an hour.

nap for about 2 hours

wake/eat around 2pm

this is the other nap where she sometimes will go straight back to sleep.

nap for about 2-3 hours

wake/eat around 5 (sometimes a little later)

then she has a fussier time. she wants to be held and has a hard time falling asleep.

she eats for the last time around 8pm

we put her down by 9pm

she wakes to eat around 4:30am-ish (although last night she woke at 5:30! a 9 hour stretch!)

(she has her two month appointment tomorrow so i'll add these then)

her measurements:

weight:10 lbs 14 oz (49%)

height: 23 in (65%)

the thing i keep saying about labor the second time around is, "i can NOT believe i had a baby before this and didn't feel this pain." when i had isabella, i went in for my 40 week check-up and was dilated to a 4 and didn't really even know i was in labor. my dr. had us walk around downtown for a couple hours and when i got back i was at a 6. eventually, i just got the epidural because i figured i knew i was going to get it, so might as well get it before it really starts hurting. seriously...i was feeling hardly any pain. so, this time i was SHOCKED by how bad contractions hurt. indescribable. i had been having false labor for a day and a half off and on, so when i woke from a contraction at 1:30 am, i didn't think much of it. but when i had two more each 6 minutes apart, i got suspicious. i woke mike up to let him know that i was going to go walk around (because that's how i got rid of the false labor contractions) and as soon as i stood another one hit. hard. and then another only 3 minutes later. and it was painful. they started coming every three minutes and i knew it was time so i told mike to call my mom. (she was coming so that we could keep isabella asleep at home). i pretty much thought i was going to die every time i had a contraction and it felt like forever before my mom got here. the car ride was even worse. i was flailing around and moaning and yelling that i couldn't do it any more and that i thought i was going to die. and then in between contractions i'd sit there in shock that i was actually yelling and praying that i would get a longer than 3 minute break. i didn't. it was pretty much a hellish 30 minute drive to the hospital. mike parked in the ambulance parking at the ER and i waddled in and told the security guard that i wanted an epidural. we were laughing at ourselves (well, i was laughing until another contraction hit), and how panicked we must have seemed. so, the nice security guard offers to walk me to triage while mike went to park the car. i was so mad i had to go to triage! i know its standard procedure, but i KNEW i was in labor and i was so nervous i wouldn't get the epidural in time. i figured i was dilated at least to a 6 because i was in so much pain. if i got to a 6 with isabella with hardly any pain, than surely i'm farther. well, i was a 6, and they sent me up to a room where i promptly told our nurse that i needed an epidural. she was amazing and i told her i loved her within our first few minutes of meeting. i ~~braved~~ moaned through the next contractions until i got the epidural. i felt relief almost immediately and then i was a happy lady. mike said it was like i was a different person. so, we rested and waited for my body to finish dilating. they broke my water around 7 am, and i was fully dilated and feeling like i needed to push by 9. the nurse paged the dr. and then he didn't show. so she paged him again, and when he came in and got "in position" he made an "oh, whoa, guess i should have come right away" type of face. so, i pushed a few times and at 9:31am we got to meet our sweet hadley kate! overall, i'd say this time was better/easier because it all went a lot faster and i only pushed for less than 10 minutes. (with isabella i was in labor for about 23 hours and pushed for 2 hours). but, i still just can't believe how different it was. and man oh man how bad it felt. thank goodness for epidurals!and here are the latest pictures of the girls:

isabella stayed with my mom and walt while we were in the hospital (and also one extra night!). here she is coming home and seeing that hadley is there. she was VERY exciteda proud big sisterthe next morning. our girls in their jammies.
hadley is a very sweet little baby. here are some things we've learned about her in the last 6 days: she's cuddly-she likes to be held. she makes a cute little squeeking noise. she likes her soft, fuzzy blanket from her auntie alison and auntie becky. she poops a lot. she likes her bink, but isn't dependent on it (we hope it stays this way!). she doesn't like getting touched by cold hands and she hates getting wiped with a cold wipe. she's a good eater. she gets the hiccups around 10:30 pm (right when we are ready to go to sleep). she sleeps for 4 hour stretches at night.

she's just the sweetest baby and the perfect addition to our family.

mike got isabella up from her nap yesterday and i stayed downstairs on the couch waiting for them. when she saw me she looked at me for a few seconds, leaned forward and smelled my hair, then said, "pretty mommy." i had taken a shower while she napped and my hair was still wet. we've talked before about how good our hair smells after we shampoo it, but i just loved that she thought it all on her own.

(just one of those moments that melted my heart and that i wanted to remember.)

here are a few videos of her singing. she really can sing these songs much clearer, but when she has an audience (a camera), she acts silly, so this is the best i could get out of her.

this one drags on in the beginning, but i love how she sings "where" at the end!

in other news, in the past week or so, i've developed what i think is pregnancy induced carpel tunnel. its the worst when i sleep and first wake up, but my hands/fingers are somewhat numb all day long. baby center says it should go away after i have the baby. just another glamorous part of being pregnant, i guess! i'm due in one week from today and i'm getting SO excited to have her! i just can't wait to go into labor, and i just can't wait to see this little girl's face!

i know its kind of dumb, but i really want a new, special outfit for baby girl to wear home from the hospital. (its dumb because i have about 3 pictures of isabella wearing her "special outfit" while in the carseat on the way home and you really can't even see the outfit!). so, i bought a little white one piece outfit from gap with a plan to have my mom sew ruffles or something cute on it. well, i'm getting antsy and just wanted to have the outfit done today. so, in my impatience i thought that maybe i could iron on a flower over the little bear (you know, the one gap puts on everything). after i did that, i thought that doing something around the collar would be cute so i hand sewed a little ruffle thingy (technical term). i don't normally post about my craft attempts because, well, this is my sister. but, i'm REALLY proud of this!

one of mike's favorite things to hear her say is, "read the book." my favorite thing recently is that she calls a granola bar a "monkey bar." she had one for the first time last week (at work), and when we got there this week, she saw one and started saying "monkey bar." at first i thought she was saying that because she had eaten hers when we were at the zoo looking at monkeys. but then i realized that she knew it was some sort of bar and couldn't remember which one, so she went with monkey bar.

we watch this show on on demand. its just 12 minutes of kids singing nursery rhymes. she used to just sit and watch, but now she sings along and does the motions. there's a song that says "sleep baby sleep" and she sings it in a high pitched voice and does the sign for sleep (she hasn't signed in a loooong time, so we aren't sure why she does it, but it is REALLY cute). we also watch her birthday video from uncle tim and auntie abby, and she has started doing the motions for those songs too. abby does this whistle sort of thing with her hands that isabella tries to do and asks us to do. and she asks for "abby" all day long. thank goodness for that video and skype...she knows her aunt and uncle who live in boston!

we also listen to psalty pretty much non-stop while in the car. i don't know how well i'll be able to describe this, but i want it documented for us to remember, so bear with me. in the sing-along-athon song there is a part where the kids sing, "ah ah AH AH AH." she sings along with it with her mouth in an "o" shape and puts her arms out to the side. it cracks me up every time. there is also the "i've got the joy joy joy joy down in my heart" song with an obnoxious/high pitched "wheeeeere" that she does.

(i wrote this awhile ago and saved it thinking i'd take video of her saying these things and add the video. well, i took the videos and they're still on my camera. so, i'm just going to post this now and do the videos when i get around to it).

we went to see santa this afternoon. we've been prepping isabella by showing her the picture of her sitting on santa's lap from last year and telling her that she'll sit on his lap, look at the camera, and say "cheese." we were really excited to see how she'd react. the way this santa visit works is that you wait in line outside and when its your turn you go into the cottage and sit right down. my point is: your kid doesn't get much of a chance to warm up to santa. we pretty much had to put her on his lap within 30 seconds of her seeing him. so, as i'm walking closer to him i realize that this santa is MASSIVE. i mean, he was just a large man. so when i set her down and took a few steps back, its no wonder she made the face she did. but, we think its hilarious and so cute! waiting in line to see santa!more waiting

(we waited a little over an hour. we took turns taking her into different stores to warm her up. it was a cooooold day).

isabella and i went to john, molly, and vienna's last weekend! and in true molly/hillary form, we have NO PICTURES OF OUR GIRLS TOGETHER! what the heck were we thinking?!

baby vienna is seriously the most beautiful baby ever. and she is so happy and content (even when she got a flu bug and was throwing up...she still smiled in between gagging...poor baby). it was my first time visiting now that we both have little girls and it was definitely a little different than usual. ever since we got out of college we've been traveling back and forth every few months to shop and eat out at restaurants every day. not so easy with two little ones on different schedules! i guess this is what friendships do: grow and change with time. but honestly, this trip was the best one yet becuase i'm telling you: vienna is the cutest little baby girl you've ever seen! oh, i just love her! thank you molly (and john. but who am i kidding, he doesn't read blogs!) for being such an amazing hostess. love you!i just like this picture because its the first time i was able to put isabella in her uggs with no leggings/baby legs, and i thought she looked so cute!
check out her nose. the day before we left she was running around outside anna's school and fell and hit her head. i heard her head hit (oh my goodness is that just the worst sound ever?!) and went running. it was bloody and she got a bloody nose too. she was crying and i know i'm supposed to be all calm and make her feel better, but with these pregnancy hormones i just lost it. i think i cried harder than her. as it turns out, she's fine. the scratch on her nose is almost completely gone this week. (thank you for protecting her, Lord).
also, isn't molly's nursery chair (the one she's sitting on) the cutest ever?when mike picked us up, we went straight to the tree farm!

thankfully, she really doesn't touch the tree...much. she just needs a gentle reminder every now and then that its just for looking at. and then she leans her face in so that its almost touching the tree to get a good look. (not sure what this face is about, but she was proud to stand in front of the tree this morning, so i thought it was cute).

we've been wanting to go to the pumpkin patch but the weather hasn't been cooperating. so when it stopped raining saturday afternoon, we made a run for it. the wind blew all of the rain clouds away and we had the best time. the place we went was a little farm with tons of animals to feed and pet. first up were the goats-isabella's absolute favorites!just look how excited she is!

we went for a weekend on jon and laura's boat with jon, laura, jen, and brett. i only took 2 pictures the whole time! but, i love love love this picture. mike and i are so thankful that there are so many men in isabella's life who love her. between our friends and family, we know that there will never be a lack of healthy attention and affection from men. (okay, that just sounded weird...does it make sense?) for awhile she got on a kick of wanting to wear this bikini top.its been a great (and busy) couple months. here is a little update on isabella (mostly for my records since i'm not so good at keeping up on a baby book):

she seems to understand everything now and is talking more and more. she still loves reading books. she's been really into the 'lift the flap' books. when she gets frustrated (either with a toy or when we tell her something she doesn't like) she runs towards a wall. its pretty comical. she likes playing with the buckles on her baby car seat. she likes "trying on" clothes and shoes. she has almost completely mastered the fork. she has 5 teeth. she switched from a bottle to her "big girl" cup with a straw. my very favorite thing she's been doing: when we all cuddle together and sing before bed, she's been pushing our faces together to make us kiss. she (thankfully) hasn't learned to say "no" yet, so she says "yeah" all day long. when she falls or bonks herself she says "whoa." she's still taking 2 naps a day. she's into putting on necklaces and bracelets.

she is A LOT of fun and i love being her mom. but sometimes i get so weary of saying the same things ALL DAY LONG. "use your words," "use a sweet voice," "mommy is listening...what would you like?" "when you're all done with your food, say 'all done,' its not polite to throw your food on the floor," "mommy's hands are busy right now, why don't you go play with..." "this is mommy's food, you can eat the food on your tray."

i'm excited for her to get more words. i think (hope) that this part of parenting will get a little easier as she can communicate more. in fact, i know it will because if i've learned anything about parenting, i've learned that all behavior issues happen in stages. this is just a stage, and it will soon pass and we'll be on to the next thing.

well...she is currently awake from her morning nap and eating lunch. and by "eating" i mean "inhaling." geesh, sometimes she doesn't even chew!

the mustache camping trip

we headed to lake kachess for our annual camping trip a couple weekends ago. we scored two awesome spots that were almost completely shaded (which was important because the heat was starting to make me crazy). the lake felt amazingly refreshing. and if you're isabella, it was also a great spot to sit and eat handful after handful of small rocks.

so, we got home from camping (camping post to come-nasty mustache pictures included), and were hanging out when all of the sudden isabella came ~~strolling~~ toddling around the corner! we laughed so hard and cheered so much for her that she did it over and over, so we were able to catch it on camera! she's been taking steps for almost 2 months now, but we called them "falling forward steps." now its official. she took her first real steps!

(a few things of note: she got so excited about how excited we were that she would fall down and roll all around and act "crazy crazy." so that is why she starts flailing around on the floor and we call her crazy. also, listen for her to say "all done" at the end. pretty cute.)

i can't believe its been a whole year! we feel so blessed that God has entrusted isabella to us. she has brought such joy to our lives and i just don't have the words to express how much i love her and love being her mommy. so instead, here are a ton of pictures of our sweet and sassy little one year old.

this post is over a month late, so i just quickly picked some pictures out of the 11 month folder and posted them. the only things of note from her 11th month are that she got her first tooth, and that she started whining so much in the car that i think my head might actually explode. the one year post is coming soon. (i can't believe my baby is one!). on uncle jon and auntie laura's boat on opening day! SO much fun!

HEY-O!!! Happy Birthday Tim!! We are so sorry that we cannot be there to celebrate your big day with you, especially since you are 30 now (WHAT?! REALLY?! HOW ARE YOU THAT OLD?!) and basically almost dead (well at least in the steep part of the hike that gets you to the point where the wheelchair you have to be in really picks up speed as it rolls down the hill). We love you a lot and wanted to dedicate a post to the best brother on the planet. Thank you for your constant words of wisdom and encouragement and for the example you set of what it means to be a man after God's heart. I love you (Hillary and Isabella do too) a lot. pig tails!just looking out the window for some birdiesall cozied up watching her showcute, pregnant molly! she came to visit during her spring break and we had a very relaxing few days together. it was her last time coming here before she has her baby so we had to live it up by getting manicures and pedicures and staying at a hotel one night. of course, we also did lots of tv watching, shopping, and eating yummy food. i took this in the dressing room, but its a good view of sweet little baby swansonher first Easter

i just had to document this on the blog. she has been in a stage (sweet mercy, PLEASE let this be a stage) of whining practically all day long. right before i turned on the camera she was rocking back and forth in the saucer and laughing. and that's how it goes with her: one second totally happy, the next a whining mess. good thing we love her so much!
